Big Mike Banana!

Gros Michel

The Gros Michel banana, also known as Big Mike, was introduced to consumers at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Since its debut, it has been recognized as the fruit that changed the world. With its rich, creamy texture and sweet flavor, the Gros Michel banana has captivated fruit lovers for generations.

Our Gros Michel bananas aim to replicate the same attributes that originally captivated consumers for decades. Furthermore, we are committed to growing them under sustainable agricultural conditions, ensuring top quality and superior taste while offering a more ecological alternative in the marketplace.

History of gros michel

Originating from Asia, the French naturalist Nicolas Baudin brought the Gros Michel banana to the Caribbean Island of Martinique. In 1830, French botanist Jean François Pouyat transported the plant from Martinique to Jamaica, and from there, it expanded into Central America.

The historical introduction of the Gros Michel banana at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition marked the beginning of its prominence in the booming banana industry. Known for its great customer appeal, the Big Mike banana remained at the forefront until the 1950s. However, the outbreak and rapid spread of Panama disease (Fusarium wilt) led to eradicating all commercial plantations of Gros Michel in Latin America and most parts of the world by 1960.

Though thought to be extinct, the Gros Michel found refuge in certain regions where specific climatic conditions and cultivation practices allowed its preservation. Notably, it was grown alongside coffee plants, benefiting from the shade provided by the banana trees, which ensured the continued production of both crops.

Global Impact

The demise of the Gros Michel banana forced the banana industry to completely change how it brought the product to market. The replacement, the Cavendish banana, did not offer the same logistical and distribution benefits as the Gros Michel. Known for its robust shell, the Gros Michel could withstand rough handling without compromising the internal quality of the fruit.

With the logistical and transportation innovations developed since its introduction, the Gros Michel banana stands to benefit significantly. These advancements offer a longer shelf life and improved transport conditions, resulting in fewer ripening incidents and spoilage during transit. Thanks to its superior durability and quality, the Gros Michel could once again become a preferred variety for both producers and consumers.
